The Spirit of Baraka is a reference site that celebrates films such as
Baraka, Koyaanisqatsi and the people who
made the films.
The web site has no official connection with any of the films listed.
It serves as a reference to the films and their creators.
Past
In 1998, whilst living in Perth in Australia, a friend of mine, Cameron Evans,
suggested that I go with him to the Leederville Theatre to watch a film
called Koyaanisqatsi. I was intrigued by Cameron's
description of the film, but knew nothing of what to expect.
Whilst watching the long opening scene of the film, which is of the burning
base of a space rocket during take off, I was not sure whether
this was my kind of film. However, as the film continued, evolving into
the many scenes that make the film so powerful, I became sucked into the
film.
By the end of the film I was engrossed, and wanted more.
Cameron told me of Baraka, which we later watched on VHS.
Upon my return to the UK, where I live, I started to research
the films. At the time information was very difficult to
find. In 2001, as my findings increased I decided to create a web site to
share the information and to celebrate the films.
Present
The web site currently contains details of any films that fit into the genre
that the site celebrates. Some of the films idea's vary greatly, but all
of the films share the same underlying theme. There are
no actors, scripts or plots. Every image is from the real
world.
Future
The site will continue to grow, including any films, old or new, that are
bought to my attention.
