It is definitely a Mercury-Atlas rocket, most likely manned as this picture is taken from film footage and few of the Atlas ICBM's and even fewer unmanned Mercury-Atlases were filmed. Chef GNew Mexico USA3
But none of the manned mercuries blew up. The only fatalities in the US space program before the 1980's were the 3 astronauts in the Apollo 1 "Dress Rehersal" fire. BenColumbus OH2
